Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act

Near the end of 2003, President Bush signed the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act, a law that completely revised the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act, an existing law that provided a significant number of protections for servicemembers. The idea behind the SCRA, and the SSCRA before it, was that while servicemen and servicewomen were protecting our country, it is our government’s responsibility to help them meet financial obligations at home if they are experiencing difficulties. If you are on active military duty and are having trouble, the SCRA can help and the HUD can help – there’s no reason why you should worry about your home when you’re abroad putting your life on the line.

The SCRA can help with mortgage relief, termination of leases, protection from eviction, a 6% cap on interest rates, stay of proceedings, reopening default judgments, and many many more scenarios. If you are having trouble, contact someone at the HUD or seek military legal assistance attorneys for help.
